GROUPER (HAPUKA)

The Maori name for grouper is ‘harpuka’ (translated as ‘big belly’) and Is the most common name used in northern New Zealand.

Groupers are teleosts, typically having a stout body and a large mouth. They are not built for long-distance fast swimming and prefer to lie and wait for prey rather than chasing in open water.

Grouper is a great eating fish and usually caught in deeper water between 60 and 200 meters. They are caught during the winter months and are fished for over deepwater reefs. Grouper can grow up to 2 meters in length and exceed 55kg.

Baska Voda Charters will provide you with all the heavy tackle and knowledge you’ll need to catch these sometimes massive fish. Contact us for bookings times and prices.
